I am presently being wrongfully sued and would like to fight it. If I do and lose and the judgement is larger than I can afford to pay can I declare bankruptcy and have the dept wiped out?

Depending on the type of debt, a judgment is normally discharged in a bankruptcy.
If the debt is a result of the following, it could survive a bankruptcy:
- student loan if you left school in the past ten years
- court fine or cost
- maintenance/alimony
- fraud/embezzlement etc
- an award of the court due to an assault
