Question:

I was a joint applicant on a mortgage with my ex boyfriend. We broke up and we verbally decided I would keep the car and he would keep the house. I kept my name on the mortgage because I knew my ex wouldn't be able to get another mortgage just in his name. Now, almost three years after I moved out, he has filed bankruptcy which showed up on my credit report. I was never contacted by anyone, my ex or any creditor. What can I do?

Answer:   Unfortunately, by leaving your name on the mortgage you are responsible for payment if the other party does not pay. You should contact the mortgage company and find our what the deficiency is and see if you can make arrangements to either pay them back or make a mutually agreeable arrangement so they take their negative comments off your credit report.
