Question:

I was wondering if you would have student loan bankruptcy advice in the case where the student loan was used to obtain an asset (computer) through a learn at home program. The program was a complete misadvertisement and my name is inked to a student loan to cover it.

What options do I have? I am currently investigating going bankrupt and the only advice I have received so far was to ask an MP for a clarification.

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Answer:   Unfortunately, unless the "schooling" was more than 10 years ago, bankruptcy does not discharge a student loan. In Alberta, only Credit Counselling Services of Alberta with their Orderly Payment of Debt program is able to help you with a student loan. Their number in Alberta is 1-888-294-0076. If you feel you were mislead by a creditor, you may want to contact Alberta Consumer and Corporate Affairs to make a complaint.
