Question:

I just recently found out that my ex-commonlaw spouse has recently filed for bankruptcy. I co-signed several loanswith him. I am currently on employment insurance, and am now living with someone else, who is a full time student. I realize that I will now be held accountable for the outstanding loans. I have considered filing for bankruptcy myself, due to my current situation. I have few assets and I am renting now. The two loans that I know of are over $10,000 total; there may be a third if he still owes on that as well. We haven't spoken in a long time I am not sure of his situation. Is there any way I am able to find out how this is affecting me?

Answer:

If you know who the third creditor is, call them to see if you are responsible for the debt. Also, if the other two creditors are pursuing you, then call them as well to obtain the total debt load.

You should contact a Trustee in your area to attend a free assessment of your financial situation.
