Question:

I owe about 5,000 in credit card bills in addition to 15,000 in student loan payments. I am having trouble making the payments at the moment and have had credit delinquincies in the past months. Can you tell me what the best course of action would be? I would like to get a loan and pay off my credit cards. The student loan I can handle.

Answer:   If you have recently had problems with your payments you may have difficulty consolidating at an affordable interest rate. I would suggest you contact Credit Counseling Services of Alberta at 1-888-294-0076 about their Orderly Payment of Debt Program (O.P.D.) That program consolidates your unsecured debts under a Court order and allows you up to 4 years to pay. If you do not qualify for the O.P.D. program, Melanie Leigh at our Red Deer office would be happy to explain other options such as bankruptcy to you. Her number is (403)350-2266.
