Question:

I am currently in a huge financial mess, and probably have to declare personal bankruptcy soon. However, My fiance and I are going to get married in about three months. My question is if I declare personal bankruptcy and then get married, since my fiance and her family have agreed to cover the total cost of the wedding, would this have any affect on her part or mine in any way? Would she be held responsible for my action in any way?

Answer:   If you make an assignment into bankruptcy your fiancée should not be affected unless she has cosigned any of your debts. One of the requirements in a bankruptcy is to report family income and expenses to the Trustee for at least 9 months. Your fiancée's ability to pay for the wedding should not be a problem, but there may be other issues resulting from the wedding such as acquisition of assets that should be discussed with your Trustee. You can arrange for a free consultation about your situation by calling Collins Barrow in Alberta at 310-8888. If you do not live in Alberta, check the yellow Pages for a Trustee in your area.
