Question:

What happens if you are barely getting by month after month and cannot even afford the Trustee's fees? I've heard that if one can get two trustees to deny you as you can't afford to pay that you can still go bankrupt and not have to pay. If this is true, how does it work?

Also, I'm going to be the one going bankrupt and my husband is a permanent resident of Canada and I'm the one who sponsored him for 10 years (have only gotten through 1 year), will my going bankrupt affect us with Immigration?

You are correct in that you must see two Trustees who will not take your file. You then contact the Superintendent of Bankruptcy and they will assign you a Trustee. There still may be some fees to pay (approximately $500), but likely no more than this if you don't have the resources and as long as you do all of your duties.

I am not sure if filing bankruptcy affects immigration. You may want to contact them directly to find this out.
