I had a cell phone back in 1996. I discontinued use of it and
was sure the amount due went on my Visa. I have not been contacted
since and just recently I recieved a notice in the mail from a
collection agency stating that I owe $1,175.00. I was wondering if they
can do anything, and why haven't they contacted me before? It has been
7 years and I thought it was paid. I have also had credit reports done
and there was no mention of this outstanding debt on any of the reports.

If you owe the debt, the collection company is within their rights to
try and collect from you. The debt, however, may fall under the 2 year
"Statute of Limitations" if no attempt has been made to collect before
now. That means you may not have to pay it. You may want to speak to a
lawyer who deals with debt collection about this.
