Question:

I had student loans in Canada and Alberta from 1997-2000. I currently live in the USA and have been here from 1997. I married a US Citizen and have been sitting here waiting for my Green Card for over a year. I have been unable to work since 2000 and i owe over 30,000 in loans from Canada. Now the loans have gone to collectoin agencies and we are trying to pay what we can. Is there anything I can do, such as file for bankrupty? Thank you.

Student loans cannot be discharged by bankruptcy in Canada unless you have been out of school for more than 10 years. You may want to try Credit Counselling Services of Alberta at www.creditcounselling.com about their Orderly Payment of Debt program.
