My marriage been over for eight years and divorced for seven years here in Calgary. Now the government wants over $5000 GST from me
that the ex hasn't paid. He claimed business and I think personal
bankruptcy a year or so ago. He owed a lot of money to the government and
creditors. When we were married he owned a company and the accountant
put myself and two young sons down on paper only as director etc... I
never got paid by this company but for a few years I paid $1,100 to
$1,300 a year in taxes for this company. The accountant said it was a
tax write off. My sons are grown and one had to pay off taxes for
this man. Now eight years later after I left the marriage they want more
money out of me. Can they do that? I need answers for I do not have
that kind of money. Six years ago I had claimed personal bankruptcy and I'm
just starting to get my life together.

There is a provision under the Tax Act that allows someone like you to
argue that you had nothing to do with the company after the divorce and
are, therefore, not liable for the debt. You should contact Canada
Customs and Revenue Agency (Revenue Canada - GST)about this matter.
Their telephone number is in the blue pages of your phone book.
Good luck,
