Question:

My husband, Mike, and I lost almost everything two years ago when Mike lost his job. We have been struggling to keep our heads above water. When we had all the trouble two years ago, I cashed in my retirement to try to live. Then we owed the IRS $5,800.00. I have been paying them $160.00 for two years now, and still owe $4,200.00. Now I did my taxes for 1999 and we owe them another $700.00. We just can't pay this.

If we declare bankrupcy what would we lose? We have a 5th-wheel (the only thing we salvaged), a 1995 Ford Escort (paid for) and a 1992 Ford 4X4 (paid for). We don't have any property or a home. Could you let me know if it would be to our benefit to declare bankrupcy?

Answer:

You mention the concerns you are having with the IRS. I am assuming you are located in the United States are all your debts are US. I would suggest you contact bankruptcy specialist in your area as a Canadian Trustee cannot help you.
