Question:

My parents GAVE me a house as part of their will. (They are still alive and the title of the house is under their name). The house was given to me 3 years ago and this year they have said that as soon as I pay off the taxes (which I have let get to $3500) they will transfer the house into my name. The problem is I can't seem to get it paid off!! I also have bad credit which I have been working at to improve. The house is free and clear from a mortgage, and my spouse and I would like to get this cleared up before we ruin my parents name (if we haven't already). Is there any lending institution that will be willing to take us on for a $6000 loan to get everything back in order? Please help!

Answer:

If the house is in your name, or if your parents are willing to pledge the house as security, a mortgage broker could probably help you to arrange financing for the amount you need. Otherwise, I would suggest talking to your banker about a line of credit or loan. If you need help with the debts other than the property taxes, Credit Counselling Services of Alberta may be able to assist you. Their website is www.creditcounselling.com.
