Question:   We filed for Bankruptcy in 1996 (in Ontario) and were fully discharged in 1997. We tried to obtained secured credit but were turned down. Our financial status and ability has increased drastically and we would like to re-establish a good credit record.

Once you are discharged, whether a creditor wishes to grant you credit will be between you and them. They will look at your income, collateral and past credit history. Often, if you can save some money and then put it on deposit with a bank as security, they will give you an equivalent loan to repay. Also, you can obtain a secured credit card the same way.

It is good idea to choose your bank carefully and try a couple of different banks. But be careful about trying them all as the bank may record your request for credit at the bureau and if you are turned down by many it may appear at the credit bureau that you are trying to get credit and may be detrimental to your rating.
