Question:

I am an American citizen living and working in Calgary. I have a large debt accumulated in the USA and I want to declare bankruptcy for that debt. I am a permanent resident here and going for my citizenship. I have spoken to an attorney in the USA and they recommended speaking to a Canadian lawyer. I am not sure what I need to do. I've been living here for almost 4 years now. Can you help?

Answer:

Filing a Canadian Bankruptcy does not absolve you from US debt. It will prevent the creditor from pursuing you under Canadian law but it will not release you from your obligation if you return to the USA.
